February 19, 2003 lesmuug meeting at the Graaf floris chaletje Jaap Akkerhuis Hollandsche Rading, The Netherlands Some quick notes about the latest lesmuug meeting. Participants (in order of arrival): Brian, Jaap, Rineke, Marieke, Jeroen. During the arrival time Jaap received his Airport extreme. There was a pause for the soup (non-liquid this time) after which Jeroen & Brian set-up the tv set as monitors, fighting with standards and colours. The Keynote presentations delivered just random noise on the extra monitor. Bummer. Meanwhile Jaap fired up the enemy (Sony VAIO Win 2000, profound excuses for that) to show Marieke & Rineke the stars and planets, which actually could be seen when we would have gone outside. After that we tried to connect up the VAIO (now running FreeBSD) to Brian's ABX. It only seemed to work if the Airport was in the iEEE 802.11b mode of the Airport, not in the compatible mode. This needs fiurther study. Jaap's has a Silver (64 bit WEP) Lucent Orinoco, hand imported from the US, card. Trying to get administrative mode didn't work. After lots of digginge and tcpdumping we noticed that Jaap's tools (java configurator, original done by Lucent for windhoos systems, magically ported to FreeBSD), which work with the Airport he has at work uses SNMP while the Mac tools uses something unknown. A good time was had by all. jaap Breaking news, thanks to BRC (ber research centr): There are three Aiports version. The Graphite, the Snow and the Extreme. The first one only works withe java configurator (rumored to be a Lucent in disguise). There is a windhoos configurator for at least Snow and is rumored to work for Extreme as well. Experience will tell. |
